Facial Expressions

Facial expressions are a kind of mirror that reflects the human’s current state of life with true illustration. Mimics are the innate behavioral attitude for all the human beings. Here are some interesting things about the mimic. With any interaction between two individuals, body language plays an important role. A smiling face signifies a state of happiness; whereas, a sad, apathetic face indicates the total opposite.

There is 35% verbal communication and 65% non-verbal communication out of total of inter-human communication. The active urban people meet daily tens or hundreds of persons with a sense of doing non-verbal communications. According to Paul Ekman (1997) the affect displays (facial expressions) interpret but are not always intentional. The non-verbal behavior is made of the mimics, gestures, and all the body movements.

The mimics on our face

Our face mimics are very important for the inter-human relationships, whether consciously or unconsciously. The position of the head is very indicative with different poses. When pushed forwards it implies a threatening attitude; forwardly-bowed shows submission; bowed in an oblique position reflects false pretense; raised head shows no fear; raised in stiff position suggests arrogance; and bent backward head implies a sign of surrender.

Thus the head position reflects much of the human’s current state of mind. The facial expressions play a vital role in business negotiations. When your head is bowed slightly sideward, it conveys interest. On the other hand, when moved up and down, it conveys an agreement. The facial expressions include the mimics such as raised eyebrows, frowning, and movements of nose and lips. These send messages of preoccupation, frustration, anger, surprise, dislike, insecurity, hesitation, secrecy, etc.
There are the inborn programs which are the universal mimics. Thus, facial expressions tell much of things. They sometimes express even those complicated things that one is unable to express with the help of verbal communication. With face-to-face communication, the facial expressions

Facial Expressions for Communication

Language is what we use to express ourselves with. However, body language also helps in expressing one’s thoughts. Body language shows the atmosphere between two people. If you have positive body language, then it shows you as a well being, while negative body language shows the opposite.

There are two types of conversation: verbal and non-verbal. Verbal conversation takes 35% of the place in human conversation, while the remaining 65% is taken by the non-verbal one. Sometimes the non-verbal conversation takes the whole lot of 90% of conversation. A person meets several people in a day and communicates with them non-verbally, like nodding, smiling, grinning, etc, for examples.

Some people, with the use of facial expressions, display affection, either intentionally or unintentionally. Mimics, gestures, facial expressions, body movements, are all part of non-verbal conversation. The different positioning of the head conveys several messages. For instance, when the head is pushed forward, it shows a threatening attitude. When you lower down your head, it showcases submission or respect. When one raises his head and unveils his neck, he wants to convey he is not afraid. Arrogance is displayed when the head is raised in a stiff position.

The position of the head also conveys many things to the next person. Like, when the head is bowed slightly down, then it indicates interest in the other person. If the head is nodded, then it expresses acceptance, approval and consent. All these expressions are very important in cases of business negotiation, as one has to pay attention to the other’s facial expression.
One can communicate through facial expressions, like frowning, raising the eyebrow, lip moving, etc. A frowned forehead indicates anger. A raised eyebrow indicates a state of surprise. Tight lips showcase hesitation, insecurity, keeping a secret.
A forehead represents spiritual powers associated character traits. Shape of the forehead varies from person to person. The vertical wrinkles on the forehead are due to the strong lights of if you are focusing on a point. They are because of physical efforts. The horizontal lines appear when the eyes are wide open, when is trying to focus on some information and can’t understand it. Facial expressions also indicate that a person is tired.

Conflict Mangement Strategies

When we manage conflict, we can follow a number of strategies to overcome us from the conflict. That strtegies you take will be affected by numerous factors such as the goals to be achieved, your emotional state, your cognitive assessment of the situation and your personality and communication competence.

The goals to be achieved.
Goals can be divided into short-term and long-term goals. The goals you want to achieve will influence the conflict strtegies you want to use. If its short-term goals you can decide to ignore the difficulty and give in to the issue. If its a long-term goal you certainly have to analyze the situation and plan strategies that can resolve the problem.

Emotional state.
Your emotional state will influence the type of strategy you use. When you are angry you may want to use a different strategy compared to when you are sad. When you have done something wrong and when you are confused you will definitely use different strategies.

Cognitive assessment.
Your cognitive assessment of the situation will exert powerful influence. If you have done something wrong you may want to blame the situation on yourself than others eventhough its not your mistake. You may want to use other strategies when you are in an unfair situation. How you read different situations will influence which strategies you use.

Pesonality and communication competence.
Personality and communication competence will influence the way you engage in conflict. If you are shy you will not argue forcefully whereas if you are an extrovert you will most likely fight active ly to state your point.

Learning a new language

I don't think many of us have tried learning a new language. Especially a language that we are not very familiar with but by learning a new language we can prevent language barriers and we can communicate better with someone who speaks that particular language. In my opinion Hindi is an important language among Indians from India. It is widely spoken in India and it will be a huge advantage if u know basic hindi to survive in India.
