Conflict Mangement Strategies

When we manage conflict, we can follow a number of strategies to overcome us from the conflict. That strtegies you take will be affected by numerous factors such as the goals to be achieved, your emotional state, your cognitive assessment of the situation and your personality and communication competence.


The goals to be achieved.
Goals can be divided into short-term and long-term goals. The goals you want to achieve will influence the conflict strtegies you want to use. If its short-term goals you can decide to ignore the difficulty and give in to the issue. If its a long-term goal you certainly have to analyze the situation and plan strategies that can resolve the problem.


Emotional state.
Your emotional state will influence the type of strategy you use. When you are angry you may want to use a different strategy compared to when you are sad. When you have done something wrong and when you are confused you will definitely use different strategies.


Cognitive assessment.
Your cognitive assessment of the situation will exert powerful influence. If you have done something wrong you may want to blame the situation on yourself than others eventhough its not your mistake. You may want to use other strategies when you are in an unfair situation. How you read different situations will influence which strategies you use.


Pesonality and communication competence.
Personality and communication competence will influence the way you engage in conflict. If you are shy you will not argue forcefully whereas if you are an extrovert you will most likely fight active ly to state your point.
